Exciting release of LAKWENA limited edition of Nothing Can Separate Us…!
Lakwena has generously reproduced her now iconic work Nothing Can Separate Us as an embroidered textile to raise funds to continue the work of the Artist’s Garden project. The richly embroidered work reproduces the vast 450 m2 floor painting she made for the project’s inaugural site-specific intervention: ‘Back in the Air: a Meditation on Higher Ground’ across 1400 m2 of neglected public space between the Thames and Strand on the roof of Temple tube in 2021. Her vast floorscapes were created with pixels as stitches creating a haven of coloured calm above the turbulent world below. The words ‘Nothing Can Separate Us’ captured the zeitgeist of the Covid pandemic years – their resonance physically amplified from their spiritual origins by the scale of her installation. Having long been interested in the myth of Paradise and our subconscious desire and ability to see and feel it, Lakwena’s Artist’s Garden is a contemporary vision of Paradise.
Lakwena said, “The name Temple, relating to the area’s historical association with the Knights Templar is overshadowed by its now predominantly secular surroundings. But the concept of a temple - a place where heaven and earth meet - remains deeply relevant. They say that the Garden of Eden was the first temple - the story goes that we were cast out of the Garden, and ever since then we have been longing to find our way back. This idea of a subconscious yearning for paradise sits in stark contrast to the highly colonised, concrete environment that now surrounds Temple Station. Yet it is this which has become the impetus for this public intervention.”
The proceeds from each work sold will be shared between the Artist and the Artist’s Garden project.
Lakwena’s ‘Back in the Air: a Meditation on Higher Ground’ was a co-commission with 180 Studios and realised in partnership with Westminster City Council.
